Bryant and Benton Arkansas Annexation - Reader comments part 3

Name: Jack Porter. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Northlake - Salem annexation area.

Comments: We want to retain our freedoms to use our property according to our choice, and not in accordance to zoning laws set up by a city council or committee who doesn't live on our property.

Name: Somer Bowden. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Springhill annexation area.

Comments: I want a sign for my yard that says VOTE NO please. I like my country home.

Name: Pam & James Jones. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Northlake - Salem annexation area.

Comments: We do not want to live in Benton or Bryant. We live in Saline County and like it.

Name: Melinda Miller. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Other.

Comments: I am in the Salem area. If the city of Benton gets the chunck of Salem that they want, we would be next.

Name: Aaron and Michele English. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Other.

Comments: "Good" annexation (i.e. Conway) should benefit both parties-this does not. We bought in the country for a reason-we'd move to the city if that's what we wanted. Thanks but no thanks.

Name: Daryl Dungey. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Northlake - Salem annexation area.

Comments: I want no annexation period. I want a country life.

Name: Tracy L Elliott. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Northlake - Salem annexation area.

Name: Greg White. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Benton.

Comments: I wish you all the best of luck. So far I haven't heard anyone but the Mayor speak for annexation. They better look at who the real silent minority really is. Just curious, are there any vote yes signs anywhere?

I do not think there are any yes signs -- I have not seen any.

What you wrote in July is still a powerful statement against annexing a very large rural area. Bryant is trying to annex a much larger area, so those arguments against annexation should apply even more so to Bryant.

Comments: There may be other pretenders for alderman or present alderman who say they believe in what you are doing, but I am the ONLY one who has stood my ground and attended every meeting in speaking out about your cause against annexation, and will continue to do so with the help of your friends in Ward 5 and their vote on Nov 4th. Please help me by spreading the word as I do for you. Thank You each and every one.

Name: Mindy Ball. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Northlake - Salem annexation area.

Comments: I have spoken with employees of the city Bryant. They informed me that this annexation is to pay an existing loan that the city of Benton took out for a sewer in one of the new subdivisons they put in, but the houses there aren't selling. They want us here in the county to pay for it.

Mindy,

I suspect that is the city's pitch to people in the city since those are really the voters who (unfairly) get to decide the question.

It makes sense to have a sewer system in a subdivision where there are many houses packed close together. There will be many rate payers per mile of sewer line to help pay for it.

It does not make sense to install a sewer system in the country. The cost per mile is about the same as in the city, but the revenue will be much less since there are many fewer customers per mile.

The city will not receive any revenue from property taxes until 2010. You will asses in 2009 and pay in 2010. The city will not receive any increased income from state turn back funds due to increased population until after the 2010 census -- probably 2012. Cost per person for police and fire protection is much higher in a rural area than in a densely populated area.

If city people stop and think about this propaganda from the city, they will realize that it does not add up. It will really be city residents who will be subsidizing rural residents.

Comments: If I wanted to live inside the city limits, I would have moved there to begin with. We need to make Salem its own township if we HAVE to be in one town or another.

Name: William & Shanna Raper. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Northlake - Salem annexation area.

Comments: We have stand up and put a stop to this annexation business. Thanks to all those who have made phone calls and gone door to door to gain support against annexation.

Comments: I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY ON PURPOSE. IF I WANTED TO LIVE IN BRYANT I WOULD BOUGHT IN TOWN.

Name: Patrick Patton. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Springhill annexation area.

Comments: Do not want to be annexed in. Like being able to live how we want to live without someone "telling" me how to live and not being able to provide any additional services efficiently.

Name: Jerry Hill. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Other.

Comments: I live on Avilla Vincintage but I am opposed to the annexation. Residents need to ask one question. What will I get for the additional taxes. From the preliminary budget, it looks like more police officers. All we need is more speed traps. If people are expecting more services, what do they expect to get. Public Sewer?? We have everything else and public sewer is too expensive to serve isolated areas with low population. All we need is Benton or Bryant trying to tell us what we can and cannot do on our country property.

Comments: I purposely bought my home in the county. If I had wanted to live in any city, I would have bought there!

Comments: I own property in the area but do not live there.

Name: Erin Qualls. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Springhill annexation area.

Erin,

We need signage and direct mail $$$. Please call anyone you know in Bryant and express to them the costs involved to service our area--18 new employees plus benefits, continued ignoring of flooding issues on highway 5, less road attention, etc.

Bryant city council could care less about tending to existing issues--only fighting with Benton.

Name: Ken Handwork. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Other.

Comments: I lived in Bryant for 15 years. They can't even run their own city or by all means their own budget. They sure can pass all their added expences from bad deals as well as bad judgements on to their local tax payers though. They are always borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.

Gary,
Thanks for your input. We desperately need more people from Midland-Hilldale to call their fellow residents and ask them to vote NO. We are meeting Saturday morning October 18 (not tomorrow--but NEXT weekend) to pass out flyers in Bryant.

Please give me 1\2 of your Saturday to influence Bryant voters to say NO along with us. All you have to do is put a flier on their door and walk away. Thanks for your help.

The meeting is in Springhill Farms. Let me know if you can help.

What a wonderful demonstration of democracy at work. I give a really huge THANK YOU ALL to every one who has been working and are still working very hard for us all. I wore my tee shirt today in Benton and I saw my neighbors on the street - Congo and I-30 - with the signs waving. Just think about how many cars went by and saw them too. I asked several folks in Benton today if they had voted yet. They didn't know there was a vote today. I suspect that Bryant won't be quite so uninformed by Nov. 4th. Thank you all again.

Pam Jones
Blessings Pam

We will have to work harder to defeat the Bryant election. We will have to get our message out to a lot more voters. I think we are on track to do so.

I wanted to let you know that mine and my wife’s names did not appear on the rolls to vote this morning at the Salem Methodist Church.

I live at 9739 Samples Road. My property is just north of Racetrack Road, in the curve that then straightens out towards Avilla. My house is the corner house just in front of the Salem Horse Stables with the two board white fence. My west property line aligns with Samples road after you exit the curve heading north on Samples. In other words, my west property line is the Section Line and my property is on the east side of the Section Line.

I have contacted the County Clerk’s Office and spoke with Teri Brown and was informed that my property is within the annexed area. The west boundary of the proposed annexed area is the Section Line and not Samples Road. The poll worker at the polling place called the Clerk’s Office and checked and told me that I was not eligible to vote.

Being passionate about this issue, I called for myself this morning (after getting to work in Little Rock) to verify the information and found out that my wife and I are eligible to vote. Teri had feared confusion regarding the Samples Road area and apologized for the misinformation. She then told me that I would need to sign the back of the book and that our votes would be counted and hoped that I would continue to make the effort to vote.

I wanted to add one more fact to this that happened at the polls. While my husband was at the poll at Salem Methodist Church at 7:30 a.m. this morning, there were 2 other voters that were turned away by the poll worker for the same reason. I assume this poll worker turned away voters from 7:30 a.m. until this morning around 10:30 (3 hours) until Teri at the County Clerk’s office spoke with him. This misinformation from the poll worker at Salem Methodist Church and the County Clerk’s office is a problem.

This is just another proof that the annexation process is totally and completely unfair. It is bad enough that people in the annexation area have no real say about their fate, but it is insulting that even their token right to cast a vote is not respected.

Name: Brent Blankinship. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Midland - Hilldale annexation area.

Comments: I think this is very poorly planned and certainly not necessary. Bryant is about to make a huge mistake by taking on more responsibility than it can handle at this time, all because they want to outdo Benton.

Name: Jim Sikes. I am: Against Annexation. I am in: Springhill annexation area.

Comments: I moved out of the city of Bryant to avoid all the rules and regulations. People in the city are governed way too much! Residents living in the county are quiet pleased with their decision to live out of the city limits!

"The city does not have enough resources to take care of the city as it is."

Someone has really misinformed you all, and I hate to break the news. As a citizen of the wonderful City of Bryant, the resources that Bryant has takes excellent care of the city as it is now. The police and departments are excellent departments. So whoever in telling these lies about the City of Bryant - don't knkow what they are talking about.

Thanks, Reese Holloway

Why are you against the annexation? We need the City of Bryant to continue to grow. Please vote yes Nov. 4th

randsholloway@comcast.net

Even the mayor admitted on TV that the city has been growing so fast that there is a lack of money to do everything that needs to be done -- fix flooding troubles, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwYTPsbEJ1Y

I am not against sensible and measured growth, or even small voluntary annexations. However, that is NOT what the election is about. Bryant would double in geographic size in one day if the annexations pass. Since Bryant lacks the money to handle their growth over the past few years, they certainly do not have the money to take on twice as much land with low population density.

It seems like this may be an effort to out do and become larger than Benton. That is not a good reason for annexation. This is not a football game.

Being apart of a city would benefit everyone out there. Please reconsider and for the proposed annexation on Nov 4
